How Should a Linen Shirt Fit? The 5-Point Guide

A linen shirt should fit relaxed through the body without looking borrowed: shoulder seams sitting on the shoulder bone, a fist of room at the chest, the hem ending around mid-fly, and sleeves that stop at the wrist bone. Linen is meant to hang slightly away from the skin — that air gap is what keeps you cool. Here are the five checkpoints, in the order they matter.
1. Shoulder — the one you can't fix
The seam should sit right on the edge of your shoulder bone. On the bone: correct. Drooping past it: you've crossed from relaxed into oversized. Pinching inside it: too small, whatever the label says. Every other measurement has tolerance; this one decides whether the shirt looks intentional.
2. Chest — a fist of air
Button the shirt and pull the fabric at your chest: you want roughly a fist of slack. Linen needs that gap to do its job — the fabric stands away from the body and lets air move. Skin-tight linen wrinkles harder, shows every fold, and defeats the point of wearing linen at all.
3. Length — the tuck decider
Untucked — the default for summer — the hem should end between the bottom of your fly and mid-seat. Longer than that and it reads like a nightshirt; shorter and it rides up when you sit. If you'll mostly tuck it for dinners, you can take a touch more length.
4. Sleeve — built to roll
Cuffed at the wrist bone when buttoned. But be honest: a linen shirt sleeve lives rolled to mid-forearm. A good roll sits flat without strangling — if rolling the sleeve feels like a workout, the arm is too slim.
5. Collar — soft by design
Two fingers should slide inside a buttoned collar. Linen collars are unstructured and soften further with wear — that's intentional. Worn open over a white tank, the collar should fall flat without curling. If you plan to wear it open always, the collar matters more than the cuff.
Should you size up in a linen shirt?
If the cut is already relaxed — ours is — no. Take your usual size, and if you sit between sizes, take the smaller one: linen relaxes with wear and washing, and a relaxed cut sized up tips into shapeless. Only size up in linen that's cut slim.
Tucked or untucked?
Untucked for daylight, optional tuck for dinner. The hem rule above means a well-cut linen shirt does both. A soft front tuck with linen trousers is the entire Mediterranean evening uniform.
